The Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) is a community legal aid clinic specializing in elder law. ACE is dedicated to advancing the rights, dignity, and security of low-income seniors across Ontario through client representation, public legal education, community development, and law reform.
ACE is seeking a Staff Litigation Lawyer to provide advice and representation to low-income seniors who would otherwise face significant barriers to accessing justice. To learn more about our work, visit www.acelaw.ca.
About the Role
As a Staff Litigation Lawyer at ACE, you will play a key role in advancing access to justice for older adults by:
- Providing summary legal advice, referrals, and general legal information to low-income seniors;
- Providing legal advice and representation before a broad range of courts and tribunals, including the Superior Court of Justice;
- Managing litigation files from intake through resolution;
- Supervising and supporting the work of paralegals and support staff on client matters;
- Developing and delivering public legal education presentations to seniors and service providers;
- Contributing to community development, systemic advocacy, and law reform initiatives related to elder law; and
- Participating fully in the ongoing work and collaborative life of the clinic.
About You
We welcome applications regardless of year of call. You may be a strong fit for this role if you are:
- A practising lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
- Experienced in client representation before one or more of the following:
- Superior Court of Justice
- Ontario Court
- Small Claims Court
- Consent and Capacity Board
- Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario
- Health Services Appeal and Review Board
- or other comparable courts or tribunals;
- A strong legal advocate with excellent research, writing, and analytical skills;
- Able to effectively triage, prioritize, and manage a diverse and demanding caseload;
- Committed to social justice, equity, and the empowerment of older adults;
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment;
- Possessing strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with clients who may be facing complex legal, health, and social challenges; and
- Able to work in a hybrid workplace, with regular in-office attendance as required.
Fluency in written and spoken French at the level required for legal representation is highly desirable.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $85,000 – $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience
- 5.5% employer-sponsored RRSP contribution
- Generous vacation entitlements
- Comprehensive health, dental, life insurance, and long-term disability benefits after three months of employment (subject to insurer qualifications)
