Rusonik, O’Connor, Robbins, Ross & Angelini, LLP is Canada’s largest criminal defence firm. We are seeking an associate with 0-3 years of experience to support our lead appellate counsel, Chris Rudnicki. The successful candidate will work primarily on criminal appeals from conviction and sentence to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
The appellate associate’s primary responsibilities will include reviewing and summarizing trial transcripts, identifying arguable grounds of appeal, preparing bail pending appeal applications, conducting legal research, and drafting factums for argument. You will support lead appellate counsel in oral argument on motions and appeals on behalf of the firm’s clients. You will be trained on complex, serious, and precedent-setting cases at all levels of court and will learn to run an organized, efficient, and values-driven criminal appellate practice. You will work at Canada’s largest defence firm and be surrounded by some of our country’s most talented and experienced criminal defence lawyers.
This role is for a sharp writer, avid reader, and keen follower of the criminal law. You must be capable of processing large volumes of material in pursuit of the most concise and compelling argument. You should enjoy solving tough problems, forging theory into practical tools, and above all, helping people. The ideal candidate thinks critically, works independently, and sees the practice of law as a means of achieving just results for individual clients while contributing to the progressive development of the legal system as a whole.

The salary range for this position is $65,000-80,000 per year, plus benefits, insurance, and Law Society fees. The successful candidate will also be eligible for a billings-based bonus structure.
