Paul S. Rand joins Bentham IMF

Paul S. Rand, a lawyer with fifteen years of experience at top Canadian firms and companies, joins the Toronto office of Bentham IMF as Investment Manager and Legal Counsel. Paul will undertake due diligence on individual commercial litigation claims. He will also consider portfolios of claims for corporate clients seeking creative funding solutions and law firms looking for funding to extend alternative fee arrangements to clients.

He is the fourth lawyer to join the company this year. His addition follows Bentham’s recent expansion to Montreal, its second office in Canada and fourteenth around the world.

Having previously practiced as a litigator, managed a portfolio of litigation matters as in-house counsel for Canada’s largest bank, and more recently having focused on complex finance solutions for sophisticated corporate clients, Paul brings unique insights to Bentham’s team.

Paul joins Bentham from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, where he was Counsel for four years in their Capital Markets group. During this time, he enjoyed a client secondment where he led a legal team overseeing more than $30 billion in fund investments. Prior to joining Blakes, Paul held counsel and senior counsel positions with Royal Bank of Canada. There he managed litigation and supported regulatory and transactional matters for the capital markets business. Before going in-house, he practiced with the litigation group of a predecessor firm to Norton Rose Fulbright Canada.

Paul has been recognized as “repeatedly recommended” in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2018 in connection with derivatives instruments, and co-authored of The Law of Fraud in Canada. Paul earned his law degree from University of Western Ontario in 2002 and his bachelor’s degree from Queen’s University in 1998. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2003.
