Profile
David Levy on the value of a trusted trial lawyer
For more than 25 years, Levy has appeared in court on a wide range of complex personal injury cases
Most personal injury cases don’t go to trial, but the ability to secure a fair settlement is predicated on the insurance company believing that the plaintiff’s lawyer is ready and able to take the case to court. And when a trial is necessary, experience matters. For more than 25 years, David Levy has earned his reputation as one of Ontario’s leading trial lawyers, representing clients in complex and high-stakes personal injury cases. On the strength of his talent, other personal injury firms have retained him as trial counsel when their most challenging cases are bound for the courtroom. As the managing partner of Howie, Sacks & Henry LLP, and a certified specialist in civil litigation, Levy combines exceptional advocacy with a deeply personal commitment to helping clients rebuild their lives after serious injury.
What can a client expect when they hire you?
Clients can expect honesty, diligent preparation and an unwavering commitment to the best possible result. A serious injury impacts every part of a person’s life—not just their health but their family, career and finances. I take the time to understand each client’s unique circumstances so that I can advocate for the outcome they truly need, not simply the quickest resolution.
From the beginning, my clients know they have someone in their corner who is prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect their interests. Whether a case resolves through negotiation or proceeds to trial, I approach every matter as though trial will be necessary, because the best results come from being fully prepared.
What sets you apart from other lawyers?
My reputation was built in the courtroom. I have spent more than two decades conducting trials and arbitrations on behalf of seriously injured individuals. That experience is one of the reasons other personal injury lawyers across Ontario regularly retain me as trial counsel.
Courtroom experience changes the way you approach every case. It strengthens your ability to evaluate evidence, anticipate challenges, negotiate from a position of strength and confidently present your client’s case before a judge or jury. My clients benefit from knowing their lawyer is fully prepared to see their case through all 15 rounds.
How have your clients changed in the past 10 years?
Today’s clients are more informed than ever before. They have access to information online, ask thoughtful questions and want to understand both the legal process and the strategy behind every decision. They also expect clear, timely communication.
At the same time, the challenges facing seriously injured accident victims have become increasingly complex. Navigating insurance claims, healthcare systems, financial pressures and long-term rehabilitation often requires a coordinated approach. My role extends beyond legal advocacy—it’s also about helping clients navigate one of the most difficult periods of their lives with confidence and support.
How do you make sure you are being the best lawyer for your clients?
Being the best lawyer starts with never assuming you know everything. I continually study developments in the law, collaborate with respected colleagues and teach other lawyers, all of which challenges me to stay at the forefront of the profession.
Equally important is preparation. Every case deserves careful attention to detail and a strategy tailored to the individual client. I always remind myself that every file represents a person whose life has been changed by an injury. Keeping that perspective ensures that my advice is practical, compassionate and always focused on achieving the best possible outcome.
What kind of leadership roles have you taken on?
Leadership has been an important part of my career. I have had the privilege of serving as managing partner of Howie, Sacks & Henry, leading the firm from 2014 to 2022 and again since 2024. Throughout my career, I have also been committed to advancing the profession by speaking, teaching and mentoring other lawyers.
I am regularly invited to speak at conferences hosted by leading legal organizations, have taught personal injury law at Osgoode Hall Law School and present continuing legal education programs for lawyers across Ontario. Sharing knowledge and helping develop the next generation of trial lawyers is a responsibility I value deeply.
