Whaley Estate Litigation Partners WELcomes New Partner, David Postel

David Postel is a Partner at WEL Partners, where he brings years of experience as a general civil litigator, deep knowledge of court rules, and exceptional written advocacy. He acts for clients on the Estates, Civil, and Commercial Lists throughout Ontario in trusts, estates, and related matters. Succession and family wealth disputes over control of closely held businesses are a particular focus of David’s practice.

David’s experience includes a broad range of business and commercial litigation, from oppression applications and partnership disputes to ancillary tort claims involving fraud, defamation, negligence, and conspiracy. Before joining WEL, David practised for roughly 10 years at a leading Chicago law firm and a top Toronto litigation boutique.

David received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School in 2016. At Michigan, David mentored first-year students in legal research and writing while acting as a senior judge in the school’s Legal Practice Program. David received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, in political science from DePaul University, where he was selected Most Outstanding Senior by the department’s faculty.

An active member of the bar, David serves on the Toronto Lawyers’ Association’s New Lawyers Committee and is co-editor of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Newsletter. He also frequently volunteers as a moot court judge and for Pro Bono Ontario’s Free Legal Advice Hotline. David has been published in The Advocates’ Journal, The Toronto Law Journal, Law360, and elsewhere on legal writing, baseball and the law, current legal-political issues, and civil procedure.
